Daniel had asked awhile back about a mysterious stereo movie device
that looked alot like the forebearer of LCS 3-D IMAX movies. His
web page illustrated a mechanical viewer that had revolving mechanical
shutters bolted to the armrests of the individual theater seats.
The device lets the viewer sees the appropriate left and right
stereo-views placed in alternate fashion on the filmstrip.
Yesterday I ran across a short description in an old issue of Starlog,
(No.5, May 1977). There was an article by David Hutchison (also a P3D
list member) and he describes it in the section on the history of 3-D.
In the article he writes that the, "Eclipse System" also called the
"Teleview System" was introduced in New York City in the fall of 1922
at a cost (then) of $30,000. It played at the Selwyn theater on 42nd
Street. The neat thing about the system was that only one projector
and one film was needed. The only cumbersome part was of course the
mechanical viewers needed (this was of course before the advent of
LCS glasses!). There wasn't much subject matter but nonetheless
enjoyed a three year run and postive reviews by the press.
