John, look at your viewfinder lens from the front. Notice there is
a squarish mask in the lens. It is this mask that determines what
is seen in the viewfinder. Yours is probably misaligned. You might
want to wait for one of the experts to confirm this, but I think
all you have to do to get to it is to remove the four screws that
hold the black plastic part to the lens board.
