Since the safety of airport X-ray machines has been a recurring topic here,
I thought the following news story might be of interest to the travelers
among us:

SECURITY SCANNER DESTROYS TV FILM
A new, $1 million airport security scanner, which its California
manufacturers claim could have prevented the Pan Am 103 disaster,
destroyed all of the exposed film for a David Attenborough
production for the BBC when it arrived in Britain from Papua, New
Guinea, where the film was being produced, the London Times
reported today (Friday). The lost film, which was damaged by the
intense X-rays of the system as it left Manchester Airport,
represented "five weeks' sweat and toil" by the TV crew filming
Attenborough's The Life of Birds, the Times observed. An
assistant producer, Phil Hurrell, told the newspaper, "I don't
want to get blown up, but there should be a warning about the
possible damage to your film."
