I think that as long as you are relying on purely mechanical means to
synchronize your cameras you will be off by enough to cause problems
with moving objects.
Electronic synchronization can be achieved without spending a fortune.
I've described my rig before......two relatively enexpensive Ricoh
XR-10M
slr's that take an electronic cable release
that attaches via a simple two conductor
sub-miniature phono plug. No expensive multi-pin plugs needed. With
the bodies joined by a cable with this plug on each end, firing one
camera triggers the other in mostly perfect sync. No trouble with
vehicles, birds, water etc. The connecting wire can be quite long but I
limit mine to about 12 feet. For longer separation I use the Ricoh
infra-red(I think) triggers. These little receivers plug into the
cameras and are fired using a little push button remote control. I got
two receivers and two triggers for the princely sum of $20 at a swap
meet. I think new would only be $50 or so. The camera bodies or their
succeeding model can be had for under $200 apiece. Pairs of lenses are
additional of course, but there are huge numbers of Pentax K-mount
compatible lenses around on the used market.
With such a settup you get tremendous capability at a fraction of the
cost of any RBT camera for instance.
