P3D Detroit - February Report - Part II
- From: fj834@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx (Dr. George A. Themelis)
- Subject: P3D Detroit - February Report - Part II
- Date: Thu, 12 Feb 1998 14:16:14 -0500 (EST)
The subject of the competition last night was "Contemporary". Clearly,
some members had hard time coming up with appropriate slides. The
participation was the lowest of the year. We still saw some very
interesting pictures, including creative tabletops, UV lights, light
paintings, different film bases, etc.
Bill Battle showed up (after a long time) and entered the only 3 computer
generated images, which did very well.
Dennis Hanser continued his string of great performances with one 1st and
one 3rd place (both tabletops) and remains solidly in first place.
I did very well too with 1st, 2nd, and HM, my best performance for this
year, which puts me firmly in second place. All of my pictures were copied
in "negative" film from the originals (recorded in positive film).
One of my pictures was the hyperstereo of the "Old Executive Building"
(next to the White House; Monica L. was working at the basement of this
building, for those who follow the Presidential affairs :-)) This slide has
already won two PSA HMs so far. It barely made the HM in Detroit. Another
one, "3D in Gold" has all acceptances in PSA so far and got 2nd place in
Detroit.
I owe the first place to my wife who liked this particular picture, a copy
of a twin SLR shot of the Milwaukee City Hall Building (taken during the
Milwaukee NSA convention, BTW). I like the original in the viewer but it
loses impact in projection. The reversed one makes a good "contemporary"
image. I will try it in PSA, but you never know...
The assignments left for this year:
- Through the Stereo Window (very unique stereo topic)
- Winter (for those who like to present fresh work this might be a problem
due to the unusually mild winter we have had in the eastern-midwest this
year)
- Open
Finally, it was a pleasure meeting a fresh stereo photographer (just
started last December) and photo-3d member, Bill Stickley. Judging from
his enthusiasm for stereo, I have the feeling that we will see and hear
more of him in the future!
