I haven't seen Cat Women, but Robot Monster also switches back and forth
between flat and 3D scenes. Very odd, since both of these films were shot
originally in full polaroid 3D. The Mask, on the other hand, was PLANNED to
have only isolated 3D segments. It was distributed originally in anaglyph,
and I think the producers realized that a full-length anaglyph film would
be hard on the eyes. Almost all films made to be distributed in anaglyph
used the idea of a framing story with some weird justification for jumping
into 3D once in a while (the hero looks through a mask, magic glasses,
etc.).
