All these comparisons, and the entire thread, have been made because I
disagree with Dr. T. that the Realist may be the best way to get started
taking stereo pictures, and particularly because I don't think it produces
the best possible views for novices to enjoy. This is especially true if
one is on a limited budget. I have agreed with Dr. T. that for
snapshooting, the Realist is better.
Although I have mentioned that part of the problem is in the original
design, it is most important to understand that my interest applies to the
present-day situation. Of course, the designers of the system fifty years
ago (thanks, Dr. T) cannot be held responsible for the lack of availability
of an inexpensive viewr today, but that doesn't matter to a novice
contemplating his choices today.
As to your very last question above, how much more explicit can I get?
This will be my third try:
1. Comparing viewers of similar cost within the two systems, the 2x2
system produces orthoscopic images of apparent size twice as large.
Conversely, the Radix (Realist format) produces an unacceptably distorted
spatial field in an image half the size.
2. Comparing expensive Realist viewers with inexpensive 2x2 viewers, the
Realist comes a little closer, having better optical image quality, but
still producing a slightly smaller, and slightly non-ortho view.
So, if a novice wants to pay some $250 for the Realist system, as presently
available, they can approach the quality of the 2x2 format. But unless
they also want to send out a $125 viewer to each friend or relative, to
whom they want to show their newfound fascination, they are going to be out
of luck on that front.
Had history developed differently, everyone would have a Red-Button viewer,
just like everyone has a VHS VCR. But then I would have nothing to argue,
since Realist would have succeeded.
