P3D Gallery Showings

Boris and others have mentioned the difficulty of exhibiting stereo images.
It seems safe to say that there is no way to exhibit them with excellent
optics inexpensively. Since I exhibitted 2D images before I ever made a
stereo image, it was important to me to be able to exhibit my stereo images
when I did start making them. In an earlier posting I went through the
evolution of my exhibition strategies, so I'll just mention what I have
found to be the best way as of now. I have eliminated the optical portion of
the equation by enlarging the prints (one could also enlarge transparencies)
to about 10" wide (20" for the pair). They are then mounted on the wall as
2D prints would be, and are viewed with a mirrored (front surface) viewer
which allows one to see the entire image from the ortho position with no
distortion. It also allows the person to move up to look at details better
or to move back if they like that point of view better. At the exhibition I
am currently showing, I have 12 prints with 3 viewers hung near the prints.
This seems to be a sufficient quantity, but it would be easy enough to add
viewers if there were more people trying to view at once. This is not an
inexpensive way of exhibiting, but then exhibiting 2D prints is not
inexpensive either, and the only added expense is making the extra prints
and buying or making the viewers. (For those who are interested, I make and
sell the viewers, ($125)). Security does not seem to be a problem. In the 5
exhibitions in which I have utilized these viewers I have never had one
stolen. I have had several mirrors broken, but I can repair them
inexpensively. The exhibition is at the Art-Tech Gallery in San Jose and
will be up until April 15 for those of you who may have missed the previous
postings.
