P3D Spicer mounts

Lately there has been a lot of talk about these "Spicer" mounts
and some people are wondering what these are. I was asked to
bring some "Splicer" mounts to our next club meeting.

To clarify things, these mounts are made in Australia and
distributed by "Kiewa Valley Products". In their web site:

http://werple.net.au/~kiewavly/35mounts1.html

they are described as "precision-made cardboard slide mounts".
In the USA, these mounts are distributed by Joel Alpers
(Rocky Mountain Memories) who calls them "cardboard tape-shut
mounts". Details are in:

http://www.frii.com/~rkymtmem/mounts/spicer.html

The person behind Kiewa Valley's excellent stereo page
(http://werple.net.au/~kiewavly/photo1.html) and responsible
for the production of these mounts is Steve Spicer.

I think Joel at some point indicated that Steve did not like
to call these mounts "Spicer mounts" but I guess he is losing
the battle.... which makes sense... "Spicer" sounds much better
and easier to remember than "precision-made cardboard slide
mounts". I mean, even Joel calls the page with these mounts
"spicer.html"!

Here, I got the logo: "Add spice to your stereo slide mounting
with Spicer mounts" :-)

While still in Australia, make sure that you enter the "Southern
Cross International Exhibition of Stereo Photography". Closing
date is March 30th, 1998. For more details check:

I am just getting my slides ready now, to mail Monday. No,
none of these is mounted in Spicer mounts (per Paul's question)
All my PSA entries so far are in Albion aluminum mounts and
glass. I just started using RBTs for the Detroit competitions.
I admit I have remounted Spicer-mounted slides in RBTs so that
I have a consistent mounting medium. I think it is better to
have all the slides (or most of them) mounted in the same type
of mounts. This way, no adjustments should be necessary. But,
in my public shows I have left a few slides mounted in Spicer
mounts and they work fine.

To answer Paul's question:

>Does the mounting jig automatically correct for the aperture
>alignment problems you identified with the 5P mounts?

Paul is referring to earlier discussions regarding some problems
that I was experiencing while using the "modified RBT method",
using Albion mounts to mount in Spicer mounts. Since I started
using the alignment jig (http://werple.net.au/~kiewavly/jig1.html)
these problem have disappeared.

>Spicer mounts I have also show
>some irregularity in the vertical edges of the aperture, which
>causes visual disturbance when trying to fuse the images. These
>problems are not cured by mounting accuracy.

Sorry, I have not experienced anything like that (so far).

The mounting jig makes mounting much faster. I'd be happy to
demonstrate it in NSA convention, next to Dr. Dave (and have
a mounting race too :-))
