Ian Howard and his group at York University in Toronto have done
extensive research on the effects of visual stimuli on the
proprioceptive sense (your sensing you are
mvoingt). If you are placed in a seated position in a room that can
rotate around you, you will distinctly "feel" that
you are rotating, and not the room,
for example. The effect diminishes as you reduce the visual size of the
stimulus. The effects are quite dramatic and powerful. The effects
you see at movies are tiny
compared to the full impact of a complete surround field. IMAX is a little
better, but still not comparable to complete immersion in the visual
environment, in my experience.
In other words, you are completely convinced you are moving, and even
rotating  head over heels, when in fact you are not.
