P3D Cleveland March Meeting - Report
Since Mark and Karen did not make it to the meeting, I will have to
write the report. Overall, it was great fun! We had John Vala and
Bill Battle (the computer 3d guy) visit us from Detroit. Also, a
gentleman drove from Columbus (it was about time! :-)) and joined our
club. Two more visitors, most we've ever had.
In the first part of the meeting, Jim Kunkel, a veteran of the Cleveland
Photographic Society who has taken up 3d lately, presented a slide program
in 2x2x2 format. Two projector, automated show, all pictures taken with
one SLR, mostly in-situ close-up of flowers (not studio). It was a great
program. Beautiful photography, well-presented. Good use of selective
focusing too.
In the second part of the program, "yours truly" presented the
fundamentals of stereo projection, followed by "Realist format" stereo
projection which included about three dozen computer-generated stereo
pictures by the master of the art, Bill Battle.
This is just a brief summary. "The rest of the story" will be in the
upcoming issue of the "Stereogram". In addition to the regular club
news (lots of pictures too!) we plan to cover the following:
- 2x2x2 format: What is it? Advantages/Disadvantages (compared to
"Realist format".) List of resources (mounts, viewers, projectors,
etc.)
- Stereo Projection: This will be the main focus of the special
newsletter insert, covering the following areas:
1. Objective and Applications
2. Different Types
3. Polarized Projection (PP) - basic principle
4. Elements of PP (projector, screen, filters, etc.)
5. Drawbacks of PP:
- Dim light
- Incomplete Polarization (ghosting)
- Need for accurate mounting
- Distortions ("stretch")
6. Resources for PP:
- Old Projectors (compared/prices/where to find them)
- New(er) Projectors
- Supplies (glasses, filters, etc.) and References
