P3D Stereo On Broadway

Tonight, my wife and I saw the Broadway production "Ragtime". When the
audience enters the theatre, they are greeted with a giant stereoscope
hanging from the procenium arch of the stage. Its a beautiful object,
complete with stereo card. On the floor of the stage is an actual-sized
stereoscope, which becomes the first prop used in the show, as a little boy
looks into it, the giant stereoscope rises out of view to reveal only its
card which is painted onto a scrim which then gets front lit to reveal the
chorus behind it dressed and posed just like the card, and in the self-same
positions as the people on the card. It becomes, momentarily, a live,
onstage stereo effect. WOW!!
In the gift shop (Broadway theatres are going marketing crazy) one may
purchace (for $30) a repro kit to makle a stereoscope. They had one on
display and it didn't seem to be the Van Cort kit. They include 6 horribly
reproduced vintage cards and one new card commemorating the show. Its a
stereo view of the Ford Center Theatre (W. 42 and Broadway) during its
restoration (its an old theatre which has been restored) and the "Ragtime"
logo is emblazoned in red on the reverse. The saleswoman had one loose
behind the counter and showed it to me. I asked to buy it, but she said
that I had to spring for 30 bucks for the whole set. I will curse her
soundly forever.
Best,
Bob
