I was puzzled by George Themelis's post about the Drouin book as all other
references I know about Anderton I know of suggest that he used piles of
glass plates for his analysers (not blocks of glass) as well as his
polarisers which although heavy compared to polaroid would not be as heavy
as Nicol prisms. Although one source talks of a type of Nicol prisms or
piles of plates. My sources are Lenny Liptons "The foundation of the
stereoscopic cinema" where he reproduces a copy of the American patent
drawing for 1893 , but my copy is on lone to someone at the moment so I
cannot quote the patent number . Anderton was British and our patent No is
11,520 of 1891 as reported in the optical magic lantern journal 1892 vol 3
pp 88 and 100. The same journal for 1893 had an article on Andertons device
where the viewers were described as mounted bundles of glass also there is
an actual advert for people wanting to buy his stereo attatchments from the
manafacturers R Field and Co of 142 Suffolk St Birmingham (Britain not
Allabama) .
My copy of Drouin arrived from Reel 3d just last night, he certainly does
talk of Nicol prisms being used for the analyser viewers and blocks of
glass for the projection polarisers . While his diagram is even more
confusing as he shows one of the the devices for both projection and
viewing in 2d cross section and both look something like this \/\ with
sloping ends as well as inside which suggests a Nicol prism being used in
both cases . The other device for both cases is shown in perspective
without showing the slope inside at right angles to its partner which would
be possible but the ends are shown straight which does not suggest a Nicol
prism.
Andertons device was very new at the time and I dont think Drouin fully
understood it. P.J.Homer
