A snapshot of an ordinary subject appears to be the worse of both
worlds! :-)
Seriously, I too believe that you don't need to travel too far
or find spectacular subjects to take good pictures. There is
a lot to be found and photographed inside our house, in our
neighborhood or city.
Some people need the extra motivation to get their imagination rolling.
Detroit has given this to me with their system of assignments. Most
competitions have a theme and the list of topics is diverse. This
prevents people from sticking with their favorite topic and encourages
them to explore new subjects and ideas.
