P3D Re: film and X-rays

A wire service article in today's newspapers couldn't have come at a
better time in view of the recent postings on this topic. To
paraphrase the article, a new type of high-powered X-ray machine, the
CTX-5000, is being used at some airports to detect hidden explosives in
CHECKED BAGGAGE. The Federal Aviation Administration says this machine
can ruin film in checked baggage, and recommends that airlines tell
passengers to keep their film with them in their pockets or carry-on
bags. The FAA will not say where these machines are in use.

This announcement is consistent with what I had read earlier, but I
couldn't remember the details so didn't post anything until now.
Presumably the machines used for carry-on bags are still safe for
film, but I always request hand-checking anyway. And I always keep
my film with me since it's more valuable than my ratty wardrobe or
anything else in my luggage! If my luggage is lost, no big deal, outside
of the inconvenience.
