The NSS (caving) Photo Salon not too recently had to deal with
computer manipulated images in its competitons. It was not the fact
that a computer was used but the fact that the component images used
were not taken by the individual submitting the slide. Images from
two or more sources were scanned and combined and output to a single
image. Like placing a caver inside a drop of water hanging from a
formation or having the earth in the sky outside a cave entrance
instead of the moon (obviously the earth shot cave from NASA).
It was determined that if images from more than one photographer were
used then all the photographers must be listed as contributors. This
often happens in single shot cave photography when you might have
several people involved in firing multiple lights and generally
helping the main photographer. There are even several famous
photography couples that always submit slides under both names ( like
Peter and Ann Bosted).
So far the NSS has not had to deal with 100% computer generated
images. Any computer maniplulated image is included in a catagory
that also includes slides with models in atipical atire (for caving),
unusual lighting such as colored gels, or other abstract ideas. They
used to have separate catagories for single flash, multiple flash,
natural light, and macro shots. They have now combined these all into
just one. It will be interesting to see how they handle the judging.
Thanks for the time,
