P3D Slide and negative scanning.

No, not by cutting their own throats, but I know that I paid about $1000
for an HP Scanjet IIC (a good price just a few years ago), and now one
can buy almost the same functionality from HP for about $300, or much
more functionality for $800. The strategy for their printers is even
more aggressive. I think one of the reasons HP got to where they are now
is that they don't worry too much about cannibalizing their own
markets. That is usually a consideration with limited markets, and
digital imaging is still expanding rapidly (duh!). Besides, I don't
think HP has too much invested in film scanning. As far a I know, they
have only one scanner that specifically addresses film scanning, so a
low cost film scanning solution would mostly would just be taking market
share from competing solutions.
My HP slide adapters have not arrived yet, however, I did scan a
negative and convert it to a positive using a film scanner at low
resolution (321 pixels wide by 502 pixels high). See:
http://www.frostbit.com/Catalyst/3dentry.html#photo3d
for both the negative and resulting positive produced using the
procedure described in PHOTO-3D digest 2672 dated 4/12/98.
