Perhaps a solution.

We can't do high jpeg compression of an anaglyph but in digest 2684 I
report that we can enlarge more than it's normal size an anaglyph.
To be more demonstrative I put link to one of the Boris Starosta anaglyphs
and another to one of the Dan Shelley from web the page :
http://www.chez.com/alpesstereo/autres.htm

So you can see if we can balanced the weight of the file by a bigger image.
