P3D ANOTHER Editor's Point of View
- From: "Andrea Blair" <asblair@xxxxxxxxxxx>

When I saw Bob Leonard's name in P3D a few issues ago, I forwarded it to
him to see if he would like to add his comments. I am sponsoring his
posting on P3D since he has yet to get Juno to cooperate on his system
at home. The following is his response to the magazine article
submissions topic:
Since my name was mentioned in the discussion about the type of
articles that are published in "Stereo World", I thought I would
put my two cents into the discussion. Also, I am the new editor
of the ISU's "Stereoscopy".
George Themelis asked the question why I did an historical
article when I have published technical article in the "PSA
Journal". The answer is simple, my first love is history. I
have both a BA and MA in history. My second love is photography.
"Stereo World" will publish both my photos and my historical
articles. It's that simple.
But, I have had three articles published in Stereo World; one
technical article on photographing the Winter Olympics, a
historical piece on the Chateau Vaux-le-Vicomte, and the
historical stereo then and now article on Verdun. I pick the
magazine that has the best audience for the type of article I am
writing. PSA is all photographers, so they have gotten most of
my technical articles. Since NSA is made up of both collectors
and photographers, "Stereo World" will get my historical pieces
and some technical articles. My computer articles go to computer
journals.
"Stereo World" will publish articles on contemporary
photography, if people submit them. NSA presents the Louis Smaus
Memorial Award every year for the best article on modern stereo
photography. My Olympics article won that award in 1995, so I
know there is no bias against modern stereo photography articles.
There is just a lack of people submitting these type of
articles.
Which brings me to "Stereoscopy". As the new editor, I am
looking for articles. Since most of the ISU members are stereo
photographers, I am looking for how-to, technical and
contemporary stereo photography articles. I am also looking for
articles to go with the great 3-D photographs the members are
taking. Articles like the Chateau Vaux-le-Vicomte piece, which
was also published in the December '95 issue of "Stereoscopy".
Want to become a Photojournalist and cover a sporting, political,
or other event. If you are willing to provide "Stereoscopy" a
news story/article and 3-D photographs, I will try to get
press/photographer credentials for the event. "Stereoscopy"
might not be big enough to get medial credentials for the
Olympics, but I am willing to try. I know there are many smaller
events that "Stereoscopy" can get into and cover. I am going to
try to cover the Paris Air Show next year, and report on it with
an article and photographs. If you have an idea for covering an
event or an article, let me know.
Magazines such as, "PSA Journal", "Stereo World" and
"Stereoscopy" are all supported by volunteers. You read the type
of articles that the volunteer writers produce. Also the more
readers each organization has, the better the magazines will be.
Are you a member of PSA, ISU, and NSA? I am a member of all
three.
I hope to have an e-mail address soon. It will be
rj.leonard@xxxxxxxxx I say soon, because Juno let me set up the
address, but it will not download the telephone number list. So,
right now I can not read or sent messages, until I get the
problem fixed.
I hope to hear from some of you in the future. I have great
plans for "Stereoscopy" but I need your help.
Robert J. Leonard, FPSA, AFIAP
Editor, "Stereoscopy" and PSA Stereo Division Chairman.
