|I'd love to have the text archives of P3D off-line; the glimpse search
|engine, as implemented on the calcite server, is slow as molasses; Don't
|get me wrong, though - I appreciate the efforts of Bob Weir in keeping
|it on-line.

Thanks!

Just a short note on the state of the server - it's running on
a Gateway P5-90 using Linux, so it's somewhat underpowered (especially
considering you might be competing for cpu time with GPS searches
simultaneously). A bigger issue though is our bandwidth to the
"outside" - occasonally I'll see ping times on the order of 3 SECONDS
to relatively local machines ( in other words, SLOOOOOOOW for those of
you not into networking). There are some proposals to upgrade our
line to a T1 which would/will increase our net speed considerable.
Unfortunately, my last request for help via an HP sponsor for their
program didn't turn up anything terribly useful, so that appears to
be a dead end (not to say that I didn't get at least one response, but
it's from the other end of the country, which doesn't really qualify
as "local" in HP's terms). I'm also pursuing getting a faster machine
via government surplus (since we are (boy are we ever) a non-profit
institution).

Just a hint - your best time to do searches is (right now!) between
semesters and late at night (USA).

As far as Dan's disk price is concerned, on the limited prototype
that I did testing with, I saw stuff I've never seen anywhere else.
Plus the number of hours involved in compiling the stuff (we have
been thru several iterations, for example, of changing file formats
so that the maximum number of people can read the disc with a minimum
amount of trouble - for example, you may have noticed that the name
of the files in the archives have changed from photo-3d_0001A.TXT
(for example) to P3D0001A.TXT to make it 8.3 compliant - that's a
result of Dan's investigations into disc organization).

Thanks!
