John has a good point. The only other multi-platform format
(Common Ground) just ceased operations after trying to compete with
Adobe. The PDF generation software used to be really expensive, but
now (especially with an educational discount) it's only in the $50 range,
so is very reasonable.

I've been working on a graphics intensive project for some time
(on mapping Emigrant Trails for the Oregon/California Trails Association) which
involves a lot of topo maps and graphs. When you distil the file down, and
specify to optimize it, the size is fairly reasonable considering you get
an exact replica of what you started with. The BIG space savings come if
you have the text in word processor format, rather than saving it in
image format, and only use the graphics option for pictures, etc.
