Date of original copyright on the StereoRealist Book by Lester and Morgan
is 1954. That means that original copyright expired in 1981 and unless
appropriate forms were filled with the Copyright Office within one year
then it fell into public domain. I doubt very much if copyright on this
book was renewed at that time but a copyright search, of course, would
indicate.
All works copyrighted prior to 1978 were protected under copyright for a
period of 28 years and after that period the appropriate forms had to be
filed within a year of expiration for renewal. After 1978, copyright lasts
for the lifetime of the author or holder of copyright. Also, once a given
work falls into public domain it can never be subsequently copyrighted. If
it is substantially changed or altered then the new version or the new
elements are copyrightable.
