P3D Muybridge
Message text written by INTERNET:photo-3d@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
>Yes - I've seen (short) sequences of the multi camera Muybridge photos.
Recalling from memory (which is dangerous!) I think they were used at
first for primarily two purposes. The first was to settle a bet about
whether a galloping horse always had one foot on the ground for support
The other
thing the Muybridge photos were used for was in a "slit disk" motion
viewer (what to you call those things? - The are a cylinder with images
on the inside, and it rotates, so you view thru slits from the outside).<
Actually, the horse bet came first and gave Muybridge the idea to continue
with his contraption. The bulk of his work was done about a decade later at
the University of Pennsylvania, and was a scientific study of human and
animal motion. They were not made specifically for the Zoetrope toys,
although they did lend themselves to that kind of use. Muybridge is said to
have rigged up some kind of magic lantern displaying the clips in sequence
to create the illusion of motion, which would have made them technically
the first projected motion pictures, about a decade before Edison and the
Lumiere Brothers.
