It'll work fine. You'll get a 3D image that represents how things
look from that vantage point with your head sideways. When viewing,
you'll likely want to turn your head sideways to make things seem
"proper", but you don't actually *have* to.
In other words, yes, you very likely want to have the camera left-right
horizontal, but it's like being a kid and seeing a hot stove for the first
time. You *have* to test what you're told not to do so that you can
personally appreciate why the rule was made. So go for it. Just try
not to get hurt.
Although they may not admit it, I supect most everyone here has done
at least one shot that way in their lifetime. As well as touched
the stove.

Have your subjects all sit around in a circle facing each other. There's
an old engineering axiom: "If you can't fix it, feature it".
Just kidding. Does that camera have facility for external flash? If
not maybe a second flash with a slave adapter dohickey for lighting
up the background might help.
