NSA conventions are a little bit different in that respect. First there
is the famous "room hopping" where people go in other people's rooms
looking for items to buy/sell.  There is a lot of activities in 
people's rooms so it is usually convenient to stay at the "convention
hotel".  If you share the room with one or two people, there is usually
no financial advantage in staying elsewhere.

Regarding attendance, the numbers have been rising (with record in the
Atlanta NSA/ISU convention) but there are fairly steady and it should
be possible to make a good guess every year (I think).
