Yes, it is common.  In the back side you will see a little hole.  Sometimes
you can fix the problem by poking around this hole.  If that does not work,
you will have to take the rivets out.  Once opened, you will figure it out.
You will then understand how you can "unjam" the carrier through this hole.
When you are done you can put small screws in the place of the rivets.  You
must find flat head screws or you will have to file their heads flat. 

I have done this a couple of times.  Not a pleasant job but someone has to
do it! :-)
