I hadn't thought that blue LED's were that efficient for use in producing a
multi-LED white LED (as well has having to have multi-elements which wouldn't
help cost either).
But maybe the following "LED" (really a fluorescent lamp of sorts) would work.
Anybody try one? How would one distribute the light evenly in a viewer
with what's probably a directional point source?

NICHIA CHEMICAL has developed a highly efficient white LED lamp. Based on a blue LED
developed in 1993, the white LED lamp incorporates a YAG (yttrium aluminum garnet)
fluorescent layer to emit white light. The white lamp has the brightness of 5
lumen per 1W; two units of the lamp will be brighter than the automotive interior
roof lamp. It is sample-priced at 300 yen ($2.73) apiece in lots of 100, and
NICHIA will start volume shipment in early October, targeting car- mount panels,
LED back lights and many other applications.
