P3D Mark Blum and Slide Show
Mark Blum, underwater stereo photographer extraordinaire (I don't need to
tell you guys this..) is doing a stereo slide show in Santa Clara, June
13 and 14. So, if you are anywhere near Santa Clara (Northern
California), it's a stereo must-see event!!
There was an article in the Sunday magazine "West" part of the San Jose
Mercury News back on May 31st. Article was in the "Innovations" section,
entitled "Seeing Double", by Bob Frost. Had a picture (2D) of dapper
Mark himself, with caption, "Mark Blum's special 3-D camera allows him to
shoot underwater stereoscopic images with great detail". Article is
about 1/2 a page. Without typing it all in (two reasons: copyright, and
finger speed), it goes like this, full of clipped text and ellipsis:
"Remember the View-Master? It was a much loved-entertainment device in
the 50's and 60's, and it's still selling quite nicely... "Stereo
Photography" has been around for more than a century.... sold to people
in books.. dustbin of entertainment history... until Mark Blum of Pacific
Grove helped resurrect the format." [Single-handedly? Double-lensedly?
In books?]
"... Blum, 44, has traveled the world to shoot stereo photos and has
published four collections... [Windows on the Sea, 1995, Beneath the Sea
in 3-D, 1997, Bugs in 3D, 1998, Coral Reefs, 1998]... the book's cover is
a stereoscope... At age 15, stumbled across an old stereo camera at a
garage sale in San Mateo... by the 80's using special equipment of his
own design... can [now] do underwater stereo photography that's more
close up and detailed than has ever been done by anyone before....
assembled a catalog of some 5,000 images.. tries to fit his photography
in with his responsibilities as a land-use lawyer and family man...
... he's scheduled to present a slide show of his work, complete with 3-D
glasses, at the Discover Diving Expo, June 13-14 at the Santa Clara
Convention Center..."
Article closes with his email address (markb@xxxxxxxxxxxx) and Discover
Diving Magazine at (800) 776-3483.
So, I email Blum, thank him for his outstanding stereo contributions to
stereo fans and the general populace, and tell him there's been a lot of
discussion about his work here in P3D. And, I ask about details of the
show... Mark said show times are 3:30 Saturday and Sunday afternoon,
theater seats 180, "but I don't want an audience larger than 80 to 100,
I'm not sure what to expect." I did call the promoter, Discover Diving,
guy I spoke to said runs 3:00 to 4:00 on Saturday and Sunday. So,
get there earlier than 3:00 is my guess. Admission is $8 to the
Discover Diving Expo (required to see the slide show... so I guess you
can look at the latest in flippers and spearfishing equipment).
Discover Diving guy also said check you local dive shop (you do know
your local dive shop, don't you? ) as they may have coupons for a $1 or
$2 discount... parking is free.
