Go to camera swap meets or Garage/Estate sales and be patient. Lightmeters
are fairly common to see. Occasionally see a digital one under
a hundred dollars as well (a Pentax Digital comes to mind as one

Exactly. It's a good thing if one can afford it as long as one knows
what's being measured by it (which differs by type).
So if a beginner asks if they should get a lightmeter, the answer
is "Yes if you can afford it, but it isn't a requirement". That's
essentially the same thing as "NO it's not needed, good photographs
can be taken without one", but with different spins.
