In one of the books I have they suggest mixing in 1 1/2 cup
mineral oil to 1 1/2 cup neat's-foot oil. After shaking well,
wipe onto leather with a cloth, let sit 10 to 15 minutes, then
buff vigorously with a clean cloth.

To preserve leather, they mention rub the leather with a mixture
that's 1 part neat's foot oil and 1 part castor oil. Heat the
oil mixture over very low heat until it's just warm. Rub the
warm oil into the leather with a soft cloth. Let sit 15 minutes;
then buff with a clean soft cloth.

The book mentions neat's-oil can be found at hardware stores,
saddlery and tack shops, and backpacking supply stores.

In another handy million tips that you never get to use ;-)
they mention a way to get leather soft. Apply saddle soup
and rub thoroughly into the pores of the leather till it
will hold no more. Put in a cool dry place to dry for 24
hours or more. The leather will be very soft and supple.

Note; never tried any of this stuff, just reporting what
says in, "Rodale's Book of Practical Formulas" and another
book.

Piece of trivia. Tandy, parent company of Radio Shack,
originally was in the leather business. The name comes
from tannin; used in tanning leather. I don't know how
Tandy became involved in the electronic business. I guess
the same way this post got involved in 3-D! ;-)
