Actually, I agree. I almost always use a stereo camera or a slide bar, so
there aren't any vertical or rotation problems in the chips. I generally
mount to the mask, first by freeviewing, then checking under magnification.
The "slop" in the mask is an unavoidable consequence of manufacturing, but
if it weren't there the chips would be hard to get in. As the good Doctor
points out, the solution is to seat both chips to the same edge. Pretty
easy! Even if you don't do this, the vertical error is very small.
I really only use a gauge for special problems, like forcing non-stereo
sequential pix into a stereo pair, or masking off unwanted areas. I use one
of the Rochwhite lightboxes for mounting, but I made an alternate diffuser
without a gauge on it, because the gauge gets in the way!
A mounting gauge is a lifesaver when you need it, but most of the time you
don't. Of course, the lifeboats were of only temporary value on the
Titanic...
