Well there are varying degrees of rip-off. I don't have Robot Monster
but I do have "Cat Women" and "The Mask". The "Cat Women" video is
absolute garbage as far as the 3-D effect goes, primarily because it
is seriously (vertically) misaligned. As for the "The Mask", it is
not that bad considering the limitations of NTSC. Frankly I'd say
it's one of the better anaglyphs I have seen on broadcast television.
Still, it doesn't come close to the quality capable on computer
monitors or computer prints.
If your not able to see any 3-D effect with "The Mask" try adjusting
the brightness way down and watching it in a darkened room. Most
television sets are set way too high to compensate for bright ambient
lighting conditions. The problem with this is that it messes up the
picture. Older televisions used to have a photocell to automatically
compensate for ambient light. Try adjusting the constrast also and it
should help.
Of course you have to have a half-decent television to begin with.
Another thing that will help (assuming your television has RCA inputs,
most modern ones do) is to connect RCA cables from the video-out of
your VCR to the video-input of your television. Make sure that you
select video-input on your television or else it might still take
the signal from your coax-input (same wiring that your local
cablevision company uses).
