P3D "holiday" virus hoax...
- From: Bob Wier <wier@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
- Subject: P3D "holiday" virus hoax...
- Date: Thu, 25 Jun 1998 17:16:34 -0600
For anyone who is new to the internet, periodically there are warnings of computer
viruses which circulate thru the net about receiving an e-mail message which wipes
your hard disk. There is no verified occurrence of this ever happening. The closest
possibility would be if someone were to e-mail you a program or "macro" for a
program, and you then turned around and exectuted it on your machine, which would
be a truly dumb thing to do.
There is currently a virus hoax on the net called "Win a Holiday" - note this is
a HOAX, not an actual virus (or alternately, you can look at it as a meta-virus since it
causes problems by people talking about it, rather than it actually existing...)
If you receive a warning similar to the one below, please do NOT forward it on nor
post it to the mailing list. If you ever receive a warning you believe to be legitimate,
kindly check with the moderators before you post it to the list.
THANKS

WIN A HOLIDAY hoax
This is a false warning of a malicious e-mail which does not exist.
Here's an example of the hoax.
If you receive an email titled "WIN A HOLIDAY" DO NOT open it.
It will erase everything on your hard drive. Forward this
letter outto as many people as you can. This is a new, very
malicious virus and not many people know about it. This
information was announced yesterday (16/2/98) morning from
Microsoft; please share it with everyone that might access the
