P3D get off my case

-> What I'm hearing here is that the folks who like the field cases are
basically snapshooters who'll grab a few photos under "ideal" conditions
or punt. Am I wrong?

Sorry, Greg, you are wrong. I, too, use both the leather case and a bag
(Tenba 895). Even though the Kodak strap fits directly to the body and does
not require the case, I find the case desirable for:
acting as a substitute lens cap,
keeping the camera relatively discreet and unobtrusive until things get hot
& heavy (a naked stereo camera attracts far more attention (not always
welcome) than a naked SLR),
and just being there to protect from the unexpected. (I recall an
unfortunate experience at Yosemite when the strap slipped of my shoulder (I
know, I should of thought of that before I started climbing) and fell about 10
feet on to the rocks below. It landed on its bottom right corner and the case
absorbed most of the blow and provided a "crumple zone". The camera survived
and the rest of my rolls were fine, except for Kodak processing.)

When traveling I can't count on ever being in the same place again, so carry
both flat and stereo cameras all the time.
Yes, the case (and my hat, too) comes off for fill flash.

This case debate reminds me of an event, years ago, when one of my instructors
was asked where, if you thought you'd need it in a hurry, should you carry
your pistol. The master answered, "In your hand."
