As a very amatuer astophotographer, I have had many miscut rolls of 
slides due to the black background. I also do a lot of macro, again, 
with a black background. One way to help ensure slides are correctly cut 
(at least with an SLR) is to take the first one or two shots of 
something that fills the entire frame to establish where the photo 
starts. The machines are automated, so once it is correctly set, the 
rest of the roll should be cut and mounted correctly. I am not sure how 
this works for film shot with a stereo camera.
