Actually the image in a 5p mount would be 35% smaller than a 8p
vertical mount. But the same 8p mount would be 50% larger than
a 5p mount. Subtle detail but true.

Yes Boris, I have l o o ked carefully!

I wouldn't spend 10x more for marginal results. It's true there is
the law of diminishing returns but a Realist or other good quality
viewer is not marginally better. Okay enough with opinions, and
lets get down to some tips on how to SEE that you pay what you get
for!

Boris hasn't noticed marginal improvements with a Red button viewer.
>From here hence forth, exhibit "A" will be known as achromatic lens
viewer. My suspicion is that your viewing the images on the center
of the lenses. This is fine if your eye separation matches the
lens separation but for another unfortunate soul whose eyes are
not on-center they will see chromatic aberrations. Try viewing
only one of the images and off-axis and look for color fringing.
Of course you might say but IF the viewer has inter-ocular adjust-
ments then it solves this problem, but this would still pose a
problem because the sides of the images would exhibit chromatic
aberrations (please note, that an infinity lens spacing with large
enough lenses doesn't need to be adjusted for fusing the image,
this is another subject). Even achromats exhibit aberations off-
axis much to a much lesser degree.

In low contrast images you might not notice these color
aberrations, try some contrasty images and you'll surely notice
them. Yes, you might not notice them in low contrast images but
nevertheless they do deprive you of the maximum 3-D effect since
you can't resolve the disparities as well. Even in 2-D single
mounts they rob you of maximum viewing pleasure because of the
rainbow artifacts which reduce your sense of reality. Ortho is
not the only component of being there.

Believe it or not, after this (probably futile) exercise I do
exactly the same thing as you with regards to full frame 3-D images.
I much prefer full frame images and I use 2x2 mounts rather than 7p
or 8p Realist mounts and then view 'em with cheapo viewers. But I
do have some of Dr.T's achromat lenses which I will use to convert
them in the future.

I understand perfectly.

Gabriel who looks carefully! ;-)
