There's all kinds of conflicting speculation about this film. Almost
certainly it was originally planned to be shot in 3D (which is why it used
life-sized monsters rather than the optical blow-ups that were common in
those days). Depending on whom you believe, it may or may not have been
actually shot in 3D, but it was released flat, in any case. Too bad--it's
become one of the classics of the genre, and 3D would have added to the
interest.
