I have fond memories as a kid, seeing them in those Time-Life
books. Basically it was a normal left and right stereopair but
with the right image REVERSED (mirror image of itself).

The mirror is placed between the stereopair with the mirror side
on the right image. To view the image you look at the left image
with the left eye and the right mirror image with the right eye,
and presto, 3-D! See ascii example below of viewing the letter
"b". Note that the "b" is reversed in the right image to a "d".
