Assuming that you have a square screen and are projecting
Realist-format or other nearly square images, just arranging
the projector and screen so that the image is slightly
larger than the screen has the effect of masking, since the
spilled portion of the image will strike depolarizing
surfaces in the room that are much less reflective than the
screen.
If you are making a custom screen, than a black felt or
velvet mask would be easy to mount permanently.
Since the vertical masking is more important when
projecting casually (or lab) -mounted slides, it wouldn't be
hard to make top and bottom masks that could be hung
temporarily even on tripod screens.
I am mainly interested in having other folks try this and
see how they like it.
I don't think this approach should be adopted for contests
because it would just encourage sloppy mounting--but then I
am not interested in contests, anyway.
But for a casual club night, it would help beginners'
pictures to look good so that they would get some positive
feedback.
