P3D stereo cards

Someone asked about using Photoshop to put together stereo cards - I
have been using Photoshop to manipulate the monoliths I get (or used to
get) from Grand Photo. After scanning, I can adjust the color, or
remove it altogether to make sepia-toned stereograms, or duotones. I
usually scan them at 1200 dpi and print them on an Alps 1300 in dye-sub
mode on Alps photographic paper. The results are quite good, IMHO; the
resolution rivals the originals. No dots or ink-jet type artifacts are
visible with an 8 power loupe.
For fast processing, I use a Fed or Belplasca, shooting 7-perf frames
which my local 1 hour place processes for me. If the right guy is
working the printer, he will center each frame, which usually eliminates
the occasional exposure disparity which can occur when 7-perf frames are
printed thru an 8-perf aperture when they run the machine on "automatic
pilot". Of course you have to remember to compose for the stereocard
aspect ratio or else mask the viewfinder. But the extra edge
information gives lots of leeway for window adjustment and lateral
cropping opportunity. I have them printed 3 1/2 x 5 and ask them to not
trim the edges.
