Nice hint!  I made a similar discovery in a Goodwill store.  It's like
a curling iron, but the "wand" isn't round, it's quite flattened. 
Don't know what it was designed to do, but it cost $1 and on its high
setting (on a samll wooden cheese board) you can seal a slide about
every 30 seconds.  Instead of tape, I use a mini hot-glue gun (without
glue!) to tack film chips to the mount before sealing.  It leaves two
tiny craters in the sprocket edge of the film, but for speed I like
it.  I seem to remember someone on the list was experimenting with a
laminating sealer for heat-seal mounts.  As I recall, it was less than
a glowing success.
