P3D DIY E-6
Thanks to all for successfully talking me out of thinking it might be a
realistic option for me to do my own low volume E6.
Now, if only I had a one-hour place that was open for the hours that are
convenient for a working man, I'd be happy to go there (provided the
prices were fair). Ron Beck says he has "a plethora of one-hour shops
with the ability to do slides (E6)." We're pretty unplethoric here in
Silicon Valley. Mind you, if you need a 2 gig drive and another 64 meg
of RAM late at night, that's not a problem. There are maybe 2 places
that can give you two or four hour turnaround, both pro labs, but no one
in the one hour range. The corner photo-in-an-hour guy can press the
button on the C41 machine, but that's about where it ends, unless
someone announces C41 process transparency film.
I understand that "proper E6" requires rotary processing, and an
entry-level machine will cost about as much as a large household
appliance, so break-even there is out of the question unless you shoot
Themelelian quantities of film. (Or would it be Themelisian quantities?)
..
Maybe it was wishful thinking to believe that a 3-step variable
temperature process existed (eliminating the very strict temperature
range requirement) Peter Kunz, I read that your experience with the
Tetenal and Jobo 3-bath kits did not eliminate the rotary and
temperature requirements? (Not surprised that Jobo, makers of the
rotary processor, would recommend rotary processing, by the way). Also,
the chemistry shelf-life issue pretty much settles it.
Thanks again, folks.
