P3D 3-D Convention is Almost Here!
- From: Bill Davis <bd3d@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>
- Subject: P3D 3-D Convention is Almost Here!

Two weeks to go!!! Two weeks to go!!!
Two short weeks from now begins the LARGEST 3-D GATHERING IN THE WORLD, the
1998 Annual Convention of the National Stereoscopic Association!
>From August 6-10, the Richmond Marriott in Richmond VA will be literally
teeming with stereo photography enthusiasts from around the globe.
Program Coordinator Bill Duggan is currently sorting, arranging and
scheduling the *fourteen hours* of stereo projection programs submitted for
this year's Stereo Theater! These programs represent some of the finest
work from the world's best Stereographers. *Nowhere* will you see more or
better stereo photography in one place through the whole rest of the year!
The Stereo Theater has always been the biggest Convention draw for me. In
years past I've seen shows of underwater stereos, scenic, travel and nature
sequences, stereo photojournalism, stereo X-ray images, high-speed strobe
work ala Edgerton, castles, historical collections, hyperstereos from the
Space Shuttle and more! The Stereo Theater alone is worth the registration
fee to me.
The Convention also hosts an enormous Trade Fair. Over a hundred tables
*loaded* with stereo stuff, from cameras, projectors and viewers both old
and new to books, manuals and supplies of every imaginable description.
Stereo images in all formats, from antique stereo cards to View-Master,
Vectograph, Realist, Tru-Vue and Discover 3-D are also sure to be
available.
Lots of Workshops are scheduled during Friday, Saturday and Sunday,
including discussions and demonstrations of mounting techniques (both cards
and slides), beginner's courses in 3-D photography, special photographic
effects, new stereo equipment demonstrations and old equipment maintenance.
Several special meetings are scheduled in Salon D of the Hotel. The
Amateur Photographic Exchange Club (APEC) meets Thursday at 2:30, followed
by a View-Master enthusiasts meeting at 3:30.
At 4:30 members of this Photo-3D list will meet to unmask and break our
cyber-anonymity. :--) The Stereoscopic Society of America (SSA) meets
Sunday morning at 10:00.
Also included in Saturday's schedule is a talk by Michele Delaney, the
Curator of Photographs at the Smithsonian Institution, who will discuss the
Institute's stereo collection.
The Awards Banquet on Saturday features a talk and slide show by Robert
Zeller, Civil War historian and author of the popular "The Civil War in
Depth" book of stereographs.
There are several showings of the 3-D Hitchcock film "Dial M For Murder"
scheduled at a downtown theatre during the Convention.
Monday August 10 has an all-day bus tour of Historic Richmond scheduled.
And there's much, much more...
This is the big one!!! If you don't get to any other stereo function this
year, get to Richmond.
For schedule and all details, check the official Convention Website at

With so much to see and do, I may have to take a cue from George
Themelis/DrT and split up. I can go to a workshop as Bill Davis while
sending my alter-ego (DrD.?) to the Theatre. I may have to split further
and let bd3d shop around at the Trade Fair, but after hours I think we'll
all regroup for room-hopping. :--)
See ya there?
Best regards,
Bill Davis
