P3D Purpose of metallic screens in 2-D?

Bruce's inquiry about silver screens makes me wonder, why do/did
they make "silver" screens? Okay, I know they use 'em to retain
polarization for 3-D purposes but what about when they project
2-D using silver/metallic screens, what's the purpose then? I
rather doubt all those silver screens in pawn shops were used to
project 3-D!
