Well, I must say I'm a little surprised!
Many respectable stereographers have come out of the woods (sticks?)
to say they are fans (adherents?) of the lipstick-style glue products.

I have also found several interesting recipes for wheat and rice based
pastes which may be suitable for photo-mounting, and which I hope to
experiment with. As has been suggested, if they don't work, I can
throw them into the breadmaker and see what happens. ;-)

Though this thread winds down, I am interested in continuing to
receive information on various mounting methods and materials,
including the two above. Anyone with information on mounting products
currently marketed, old mounting techniques - including those from the
1800's, useful reference materials, and current materials or
techniques which they can endorse or condemn, names of current experts
- all such information is welcome to be sent to me off-list. In time
I hope to try them all and perhaps report back to the P3D at
intervals, if there is general interest. As stereocards are the
format with the most nostalgic appeal, I find the notion of mounting
in ways similar to those used by early stereographers a charming
possibility. (And those glue sticks are looking better all the time
too!)

Thanks for anything you care to share.
Bruce
