P3D Instant anaglyphs
>>It sounds like a fine idea, except that it won't work. Ain't it always
like that? You wouldn't get a good anaglyph, stereo or pseudo. Using
this scheme you would obtain color separations, not anaglyphs.
Forgive my poor memory, but in a past special issue of American
Cinematographer Magazine devoted to Stereo Motion picture photography,
there was a demonstration of a special lens that exploited that very
process to some extent. I do believe it is possible with some
modifications. The entire magazine was illustrated with images made using
this lens. Granted, there was more to it than a couple of apertures, but it
was a workable system. the images produced were very good.
The Patent on the system was issued to Stereographics, Stereo Graphics or
something like this. The company as I understand it still in the business
of making Anaglyph viewers. Either a Mr. Daniel Symmes or Chris Condon
is/was involved.
In talking to the designer years ago, he told me that a simple split filter
works well too. A Red and Green/Cyan filter is made with a slight
separation between the filters, and ND Filter s were used to balance the
filter factors. The filter was placed behind the lens. If you look at the
patent drawing, it shows a fairly conventional lens; movie zoom in this
particular case, with a split filter near the very end of the assembly
where the optic meets the mount. Find the patents and it will explain how
the optic functions in principal and in construction.
No, it is not a Polaroid system, but for those who are interested in a
simplified anaglyph system, this is worth considering. I also think there
is a web page explaining the device, or at least a version of it.
In the post it was not mentioned if black and white film or color Polaroid
film was to be used. The aforementioned color Separations will occur with
black and white film but not with color film. In the patented information,
the discussion with the designer and the lengthy article in the magazine,
this was discussed. what happens is the filters serve to separate each
view. Prisms were incorporated to help with this.
I will find the issue and provide additional info if desired.
Cheers
RM
