P3D Re: Stereo Base, Re Curious Deep Math Tale, Re 1/30 Rule

A. Klooswyk's recent posting on the intuitive route to Stereo
Base/Depth of Field correlation (aka: Todeschini, Piper, Themelis &
Georgoff's Law?) was a first rate posting and goes in my 3D-ring
binder. Glad I didn't have to subscribe to T3D to see it! ;-)
He alludes to the Procrustean stretching of small Photographic Space
into long Stereo Viewing Space as a result of 1-in-x rules or mounts
that narrow the window for close-ups (without infinity) while keeping
a 7-foot-distant window. Could this be an example of the need for
those stereo base formulas that ask for far distances instead of
assuming infinity? Tony Alderson rightly points out that the search
for an all-purpose formula is misguided. The discussion of stereo
base should be a detailed talk about which methods are useful in which
situations - clarifying for beginners and not-so-beginners what each
tool is designed to do. Like knowing what all the gears in your car
are for instead of wishing for one gear that suits all terrain, or
staying in first gear and enjoying the ride, no matter what sounds the
engine makes.
Michael tried to retire the thread, but perhaps the Tiny Torch has
been passed. ;-)
