I've been playing with just this idea off & on for a while now.  Last time
I left it it was looking like one of the sliders would have to be
two-dimensional (with a function of the near distance on one axis & a
different function of both near & far distances on the other).  Yuck!  I'll
have to see if I can dig that up again...
