Boris must be an artist - he rejects conventional wisdom. ;-)

Instead of "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" we get
"Money...is the most honest currency of praise." 

Instead of "Love makes the world go around"  we see that "[Having
bills to pay] makes the world go around."

Vincent Van Gogh died a pauper, but not because he eschewed commercial
purposes.  He was desperate to sell his work.  But his work was the
work he felt compelled to make, and it was ahead of - or outside - the
taste of the time.  If you can follow your artistic taste while not
excessively deviating from the tastes of those who have money to
spend, lucky for you.  But I am sad to learn that my sincere but
immaterial praise is somehow less "honest" than praise from people who
who speak with their checkbooks.

I like merchant/artists, but I think they protest too much.
