As for Van Gogh, his work didn't make the world go around until
the time that big money was being applied for acquisition of it.
The big money was the sign that the time had arrived.
It's not even like the work was as worthwhile in his day as later. Art
being perception-value based, rather than intrinsic-value based
(other than the cost of the materials), only has worth when it's
appreciated -- and when it's appreciated, it'll attain revenue
value.
Sounds harsh, but I think this is true in a hand-wavy way. So
although Boris may not be speaking politically correct, I think
there's truth in his statements. And I'm ordering some slides
to encourage him. :-)
